Königsberg Philatelic Center
The Königsberg administrative district was the political, cultural, and economic center of the province of East Prussia. Its postal history is closely intertwined with the more than 500-year history of the postal system.
As the seat of the Higher Postal Directorate, Königsberg managed much of the regional traffic. As early as the 17th century, postal routes connected the city with Berlin and Memel, among other places. For philatelists and local history collectors, the numerous counties, suburbs, and the region’s eventful history—including the temporary annexation of regions such as Zichenau and Bialystok during World War II—offer an inexhaustible field of research.
Did you know?
"The main post office in Königsberg used an impressive variety of promotional postmarks. Slogans such as 'Visit East Prussia and its capital' are now sought-after examples of the region's early tourism marketing efforts via the postal service."

- Rural postmark: In the rural areas stretching from Samland to Braunsberg, district and rural postmarks document the dense network of the Prussian Imperial Postal Service.
- Historical Features: Evidence of postal peculiarities in the administratively affiliated or border districts (e.g., Zichenau, Memel before 1920).
Our Research Group's Main Areas of Focus
Within our research group, specialized collectors and researchers are dedicated to the detailed documentation of all post offices in the Königsberg administrative district. This includes recording the types of postmarks used, postage rates, postal routes, and special features such as censored mail, field post, and rail post within this regional context.
The results of our research are regularly published in the newsletters of the working group and provide a solid foundation for the transfer of knowledge between experts and new collectors.
Get actively involved: Please help us complete the cataloging of postmarks and postal connections in East and West Prussia.
